What is Proposed?

Severn Waste has made a planning application to build a waste processing plant at Norton, Worcester. They want to send 105,000 tonnes of recyclable waste each year to the small rural villages of Norton and Littleworth, from 310,000 households, from all of Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

They are also looking at bringing in more waste from other sources.

This site is totally unsuitable so close to rural residential areas. The planning application is ill-conceived, in an unsuitable location, without proper consultation and has been condemned by Wychavon District Council, Norton-Juxta-Kempsey Parish Council, St. Peter’s Parish Council, Stoulton Parish Council, Whittington Parish Council, Worcester City and our local MP Peter Luff.

It will be a massive 70,000 square foot plant to process 105,000 tonnes of paper, card, cans, plastics and glass bottles a year and will replace smaller existing facilities throughout the counties which are adequate for our needs.

If waste reduction methods are implemented then the projections for this area of future waste levels are exaggerated making a facility of this size unnecessary.

This waste is commingled - contaminated - because it is all mixed together. Spillages from cans and bottles are mixed with used and soiled wrappings, cartons, boxes and reading material.

If planning permission is granted by Worcestershire County Planning committee at the next deferred meeting in MARCH at the earliest, the factory will be built to be up and running in 2008.

The nightmare will become a reality for the residents of the villages of Littleworth, Drakes Broughton, Hatfield, Whittington, Norton, Stoulton, and the residential areas of Brockhill, St Peters, Kempsey and beyond.
